Fluctuations in temperatures and rainfall levels are due mainly to changes in elevation. Much of the western part of Colombia is covered by the Andes Mountains, where every 305 meters increase in altitude means an estimated -10°C temperature decrease. In other words, very hot temperatures at sea level cool down the higher you go.
